Vegetarian Children
My kids were eating bacon the other day, because it is my son's (Ollie, 3) favorite food. All of a sudden, my daughter (Lyric, 6) said, "I feel so bad for the little pig."
Ollie: "What little pig?"
Lyric: "The little pig that you are eating."
Ollie: "This is not a little pig, this is bacon."
Lyric: "Bacon is made out of dead little pigs. You are eating a dead little pig, buddy."
There were a few moments of silence. Lyric said, "I don't want to eat animals anymore. I feel really bad for them."
Me: " A lot of people feel that way. That means you want to be a vegetarian."
Lyric: "Then I'm a vegetarian."
Ollie: "I'm a vegetarian."
(pause)
Ollie: "What's a vegetarian?"
Me: "It means you don't want to eat animals."
Ollie: "I want to be a vegetarian."
So they agreed together that they would be vegetarians. They kept asking me which foods were animals and which foods were not. After about four days, Lyric changed her conviction when her Aunt Linds made a turkey dinner the other night. She says she still feels bad for the little pig, and won't eat bacon.
Ollie remains strong in his conviction. Tonight Jason tried to offer him bacon. He gasped and scolded, "Daddy! I'm a vegetarian!"
I'll keep you posted on how long he remains a vegetarian. Tomorrow I think he's planning to join PETA. .

he gasped and shouted that in the middle of friendly's. and he said the word vegetarian very distinctly. I was proud.
and Lyric is a vegetarian based solely on an animal's cuteness. she's fine eating chicken and turkeys because they "look weird." but cows and pigs. . . they are too cute to eat.

Ah, my heart swelled with pride when those little tykes said they didn't want to eat animals. I told ollie that I probably should stop eating meat again too because I always feel bad about eating the animals. Ollie said, "you should eat nuts...they're good for me".He IS suprisingly passionate about his conviction... I mean, he's three and he made me feel really guilty about eating that turkey dinner...

My little brother (Matt, 16 now!) had a bout of vegetarianism too a few years back. We were in Maine and my parents chose 2 live lobsters out of a big tank outide a nice restaurant. They pulled the first lobster out of the water with huge prongs; Matt took one look (lobsters actaully are kinda cute) and ran back to the car crying. He said he was never going to eat meat again because of the poor little lobster! So he stayed in the car while we all ordered dinner... about 20 minutes later he came in, pouted about the lobster, then ordered Chicken fingers.

Oh, my goodness... That was great! I wonders of he'll make any more converts. I must say, the "go to hell" story is still my favorite.

When Linds and I watched the kids last week, we were unaware of their newfound convictions. We bought bacon and eggs because we know how much ollie used to enjoy bacon.
First thing in the morning, I happily announced that we were going to have bacon for breakfast. I expected this news to be received with happy cheers and maybe some hopping up and down. Rather, it was met with a cacophony of vegetarian and animal rights sentiments. Linds and the kids made pancakes instead.

col...so funny. I SWEAR he made me feel really guilty. I mean he REALLY feels strongly about it...This is just another thing that makes me think that he is really an adult stuck in a three year old's body...I mean, watch him play lego starwars...he is a genius.

darbs, it is interesting that the reference to me in this segment is that i converted your daughter back to eating animals and i am seen shooting a gun. kind of paints a gruff picture of aunt linds. i like pancakes better, anyway.

aunt linds is very multi-faceted, no shame in that!

linds, i had no idea that your name linked to that picture until just now...dad would be proud...I think I was the only kid in my 6th grade class who knew how to shoot a .44.

Apparently I am the only one in the family who isn't fond of guns...though, yeah, it was always cool to be the only kid who knew HOW to shoot one.

ohhhh, that´s so adoreable. Being a vegetarian for more than 12 years now and also a social worker that works/worked with socially remarkable kids/youths since 5 years my heart went all warm when I read the story bout your kids. That´s amazing! That´s so beautiful. I am in awe.
